The main argument for backing the White Sox was the starting-pitcher matchup. Davis Martin entered with a 9–4 record, a 3.41 ERA and a 3.10 FIP across 100.1 innings. He had allowed only six home runs while recording 92 strikeouts against 31 walks, giving Chicago the more stable starting profile.
Martin also brings multiple pitches capable of generating swings and misses. His slider carries a 40.5% whiff rate, while his curveball sits at 39.5%. The slider has limited opponents to a .230 batting average and a .296 expected slugging percentage — a reliable weapon against the most dangerous part of Toronto’s lineup.
On the other side, Shane Bieber was still working through a difficult return. He had completed only 17.2 innings this season, allowing 26 hits, ten walks and seven home runs, resulting in a 7.64 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP. His strikeout rate sat at 15.1% while his walk rate climbed to 11.6%, leaving very little margin for error with runners on base.
The White Sox had already won all four meetings with Toronto this season, including Friday’s 12–4 victory. Chicago did not need to dominate the matchup again: at 2.02, the break-even point is approximately 49.5%, and the starting-pitcher difference gave the White Sox a realistic opportunity to outperform that market expectation.
Martin’s command and deeper pitch mix should allow him to control the first half of the game and limit Toronto’s opportunities with runners on base. Chicago needed to pressure Bieber early, particularly before he could establish his breaking pitches, and reach the middle innings with either a lead or a tied score. If Martin provided five or six competitive innings, the White Sox had a genuine chance to convert the starting-pitcher advantage into an outright win.
Martin had been less effective recently, allowing seven earned runs across 7.1 July innings, and any further decline in fastball command would expose him against Toronto’s right-handed power. Bieber’s numbers came from a small post-injury sample and remained significantly worse than his established career level, so a sharp rebound was possible. Chicago’s inconsistent road offense and bullpen volatility represented the clearest additional paths to this position failing.
