OPTIMUS II does not read this as a conventional starter-versus-starter game. Sean Newcomb is scheduled to open for the White Sox and Clay Holmes starts for the Cubs — both with tidy headline ERAs — but the structure behind those numbers is what drives this market.
Chicago used Erick Fedde for 4⅔ scoreless in Tuesday’s rain-delayed game after Bryan Hudson opened, then needed Brazobán, Taylor and Richards in a 4–3 walk-off loss. Newcomb was warming late in that game and now opens the finale — another bullpen-heavy script, and less flexibility for the White Sox to pick their cleanest bulk-relief sequence.
The Cubs have the depth to exploit that structure, and the White Sox carry enough contact quality that the Over doesn’t hinge on the Cubs alone — the model gives each lineup a real path to four-ish runs rather than needing an extreme performance.
Two productive lineups — Holmes had also allowed a 43.7% hard-hit rate, giving the White Sox a realistic route to three or four of their own.
Across 100,000 simulations, OPTIMUS II projected roughly 8.7 total runs and a 56.9% chance of at least eight — with a central score around Cubs 5, White Sox 4.
The principal counter-signal is Wrigley weather — around 72°F, low precipitation risk, and wind blowing in at 7–10 mph, which suppresses carry. A sharp Holmes outing plus effective sequencing from Newcomb and the White Sox pen could yield a lower-scoring 4–3 or 5–2. That uncertainty is already reflected in the probability haircut and the fixed one-unit exposure.
