This article is about the sport through which we started to evaluate your financial resources. Baseball is a team batting ball game. The offensive player (batter) tries to hit a ball pitched by the defensive pitcher. In the game, 2 teams of 9 players face each other. The object of the game is to score more runs (points) than the opposing team. If a batter runs around all four bases without getting “struck out”, his team scores a run.
Baseball is the national sport in the USA. It is also popular mainly in the Americas, especially in the Caribbean region (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Panama, Colombia, Nicaragua and Mexico). Baseball is very popular in East Asia, especially in Japan, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan, as well as in Australia and South Africa. In June 2007, a league was established in Israel.
Baseball is played by a team of nine players on a field consisting of a square infield, followed by a large outfield. The pitcher throws the ball from the pitching mound, which is located in the middle of the infield, toward home plate. A batter from the opposing team stands at home plate and attempts to hit the pitched ball. If he succeeds, he runs out with the goal of going around all 4 bases and back to home plate, for which a point is scored. Normally, players do not manage to run all the bases at once (if they do, it is called a “homerun”). A batter who remains in the field after a hit is called a runner and attempts to advance only after his next teammate has batted.
The defending team may strike out the runner by:
1) the defensive player touches the runner off the base with the ball
2) throwing the ball to the base before the batter reaches it after the pitch (“locking between the bases”)
3) catches the ball from a direct hit before it touches the ground (out of the air)
4) batter fails to hit the ball (combination of three swings or good pitches) – strikeout
Once the fielding team has struck out three opposing players in this manner, they bat themselves and the previously attacking team goes to the plate. A single substitution by both teams in the field and at bat is called an “inning”. The game consists of 9 innings, after which the team that scores the higher number of runs in the game is the winner. In the event of a tie, extra innings continue until a decision is made.
