Cleveland entered as a slight favorite, but our model considered the price to overstate the difference between the two teams. Cincinnati had the benefit of playing at home and a clear platoon edge: an OPS of roughly .765 against left-handed pitching, while Cleveland was producing only around .688 against right-handers.
The specific platoon split, not overall team strength, is what made the gap look too wide at this price.
Joey Cantillo started for the Guardians with a 4.02 ERA, a 3.90 xERA and a 24.4% strikeout rate. Cincinnati countered with Brady Singer, who owned a 4.53 ERA and a considerably weaker 5.03 xERA. Cleveland held the starting-pitching advantage — but the platoon matchup still gave the Reds a realistic opportunity to keep the game close.
Cincinnati’s main weakness was its bullpen, heavily used during the previous doubleheader — which is exactly why we did not take the Reds on the moneyline. The +1.5 run line covers every Cincinnati victory and every one-run defeat, particularly valuable with the main total set at 9 runs.
The primary risk was Cantillo’s stronger underlying profile and a weakened Reds lineup without Spencer Steer. Still, Cleveland’s limited production against right-handed pitching did not create enough offensive separation to justify the gap the market had priced between the teams.
